(What is this post? My interpretation of the key points from Skip Cadorette’s sermon from 25 Oct 2026.)

In recent months, the pastor for the First Baptist Church in Port Townsend, Washington, Skip Cadorette, has been teaching James’s letter to the early Christian church, and these are good messages for us today. Some then had fallen away from Christ’s teachings and were being arrogant, selfish, prideful, power seeking, and hurtful of others. James told them that such ways were not Christ’s ways, and that following such worldly practices was to be an enemy of God. James (Jesus’s half-brother, and a leader in the early Jerusalem church) was urging them to do Christ’s teachings, not just talk about them. James is about doing.

Friends of God follow Jesus’s teachings:
They serve (sometimes while enduring patient suffering) and attend to the needy (widows and orphans were the example that James used). Friends of God turn the other cheek, love their enemies, give to those without clothing and food, pay their laborers fairly, and go the second mile.

In contrast, enemies of God act per worldly thinking:
They seek control and supremacy. They practice selfish ambition, jealousy and arrogance. They seek power over others, and they crave wealth and fame. Their words are hurtful to others. Such worldliness leads to quarrels and wars.

Goodly wisdom from the little book of James.
